Since 1999, Ballet Theatre Australia’s vision has been to develop each one of our students to their maximum potential as artists, preparing the dedicated student for a professional or vocational career in classical ballet.
Under the direction of internationally acclaimed ballerina, Leeanne Rutherford, students are taught in small classes in order to foster a serious learning environment and to produce young dancers of the highest calibre. Ballet Theatre Australia offers its students training of an international standing that develops mature and professional dancers with meticulous technique, musicality and artistry.
Students are also given a variety of real performance opportunities where they are challenged to become, in turn, more experienced performers. Ballet Theatre Australia prides itself on its students performing their own lead roles within performance, as it is our philosophy that only with such intense rehearsal and performance experience behind them, can a student advance to the level of a professional ballet dancer.
Many of our students have gone on to enjoy successful careers with companies such as The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Gratz Ballet, Austria, Milwaukee Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Alberta Ballet Canada, Colorado Ballet, Zurich Ballet and Monaco Ballet.
Melbourne Full-Time Ballet School
Ballet Theatre Australia offers two full-time courses, the Pre-Professional Program and the Junior Full-Time Program.
Junior Full-Time Program
The Junior Full-Time Program (for students aged 12 to 16 years) focuses on developing and nurturing the individual within a serious but encouraging environment. The course aims to give each individual student a strong and refined classical technique, whilst fostering an ability to understand and implement their own corrections, along with an elegant style and professional attitude toward their training.
Students are given a variety of real and challenging performance opportunities as well as the prospect of private coaching for national and international ballet competitions.
In a four-day week schedule, students study subjects including classical class, floor barre, pointe, boys’ coaching, repertoire, pas de deux, character and contemporary, whilst maintaining their academic studies via Distance Education Centre Victoria (DECV).
Entry into this program is by audition only.

Pre-Professional Full-Time Program
The Pre-Professional Program (for students aged 17 to 21 years) focuses on extending upon the individuals artistry whilst continuing and further refining a level of technical excellence preparing the student to enter directly into a career in a professional ballet company. Students are given a variety of real and challenging performance opportunities as well as the prospect of private coaching for national and international ballet competitions.
In a five-day week schedule, students study subjects including classical class, floor barre, pointe, boys’ coaching, repertoire, pas de deux, character and contemporary, whilst maintaining their academic studies via Distance Education Centre Victoria (DECV).
Entry into this program is by audition only.
We deliver government accredited courses from Certificate III and IV in Dance to Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Dance with Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE. The course studies enrich the student’s knowledge and appreciation of dance and is in addition to secondary school academic studies. More information will be available soon.
